CONGRESS ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The Congress is being organised by representatives from the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors and the South African Project Controls Institute, comprising Professors Pearl (Congress Director) and Verster (Academic Programme co-ordinator), and Messrs. Bennett (SAPCI) and Vermeulen (ASAQS).

SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL COMMITTEE

This committee will consist of recognised national and international academics with relevant expertise, and representatives from industry. Prof Basie Verster will act as coordinator of the content, papers and programme.

CONFERENCE HOST AND SECRETARIAT

The Association of South African Quantity Surveyors (ASAQS) is acting as host for the conference. OBJECTIVES

This Eighth World Congress is intended to bring together an international audience of industry representatives, academics and postgraduate researchers to deliberate issues of common interest with the aim of fostering international exchange and friendship in the pursuit of promoting excellence in professional practice within the build and engineering environments. It will provide a platform to highlight the vision in bringing together the total cost management professions towards a bright future in a changing environment. CPD certificates will be issued to local delegates.

CONFERENCE SCOPE

The scope of the conference is to encourage active debate amongst practitioners, researchers, and post-graduate students. Submissions by students, personnel who are working in the quantity surveying, cost engineering and project management disciplines and those who are concerned with the challenges that the built environment professions face are particularly welcome. The conference seeks to explore current advances in research relevant to the present and future state of development of the professions and industry, nationally and globally. Papers should focus on new research themes, practices and topics, innovative research strategies or well articulated methodologies applied in the context of specific disciplines. Reporting on work recently completed or work in progress is especially welcomed. The aim is to address the role and the contribution of all who add value to the industry's and profession's performance.

MAIN THEMES

Papers will be accepted within the broad areas of real estate and industrial engineering, the built environment professions' and property / construction sector development. Papers with similar themes will be grouped for sessions. The main focus of the Congress is on the three professions of Quantity Surveying, Cost Engineering and Project Management. Topics may include:

Note: the above topics are merely a guideline. All topics within the broad spectrum of the Built Environment Professions as well as Construction Industry and Property Development will be considered.

ABSTRACTS AND PAPERS

Authors are invited to submit abstracts in English (British) of not more than 300 words for peer review by the Scientific and Technical Committee. Each abstract should be submitted as per the online guidelines, depicting the topic area that the proposed paper will address. The name(s) and full contact details of the author(s), as well as specific details pertaining to their role (study-leader, researcher etc.). Abstracts should indicate: Purpose of the paper, Design / Methodology / Approach, Findings, Research limitations / implications (if applicable), Practical implications (if applicable), Originality / Value of the paper, Key words. Abstracts will be reviewed in terms of relevance to the aims and objectives of the Congress; originality of subject matter; likely academic rigour of the proposed paper; and likely contribution to knowledge, or practical relevance, of the proposed paper. KEY DATES

  • Submission of abstract: 17 October 2011
  • Notification of abstract acceptance: 30 November 2011
  • Submission of draft paper: 28 February 2012
  • Notification of paper acceptance: 15 April 2012
  • Submission of final paper: 15 May 2012

SUBMISSIONS

Submit abstracts and papers online at www.icec2012.org.za. Each paper will be sent to at least two referees who are knowledgeable in the field of blind peer reviewing of papers. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present the papers, which will be published in the Congress Proceedings CD. Note that at least one of the authors must register, attend the conference and present the paper, as a condition for publication.

The author who will present the paper must be identified. A short CV of authors must be forwarded at the same time as the paper submission.

CONGRESS FEES

Delegates are encouraged to register early to benefit from the discounted fee. Early bird registration ends on 31st January 2012. Thereafter, registration fees are subject to a surcharge. All fees exclude accommodation which should be arranged through the Congress Secretariat or by the delegates themselves.
